This document sets out the National Medical Examiner’s guidance and expected standards for medical examiners. It is issued under the National Medical Examiner (Additional Functions) Regulations 2024.

Summary

From 9 September 2024 all deaths that are not investigated by a coroner must be reviewed by NHS medical examiners. Government announced this change, which is part the new Death Certification Reforms, on 15 April 2024. This is a diagram that gives an overview of the new process.
