NHS inpatient elective admission events and outpatient referrals and attendances, quarter ending 31 December 2016

NHS inpatient and outpatient waiting events figures for the quarter ending 31st December 2016 include data for England, Regions and NHS Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs).

The figures for a quarter can be affected by the number of working days. Data are adjusted for this where appropriate, to allow comparison on a like-for-like basis.

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust did not submit due to IT problems.

The key points from the latest release are:

Inpatient Events

From Q3 2015/16 to Q3 2016/17 the number of decisions to admit decreased by 6,860 to 1.58 million, however when adjusted for working days the percentage change for numbers of decisions to admit from Q3 15/16 to Q3 16/17 has increased (1.1%). The number of elective admissions increased by 7,194 (2.1%) to 1.45 million.

Outpatient Referrals and attendances

From Q3 2015/16 to Q3 2016/17 the number of GP referrals made decreased by 31,751 to 3.3 million. When adjusted for working days the percentage change for GP written referrals increases slightly (0.6%).The number of other referrals made increased by 27,582 (3.0%) to 2.04 million.

From Q3 2015/16 to Q3 2016/17 first attendances at consultant outpatient clinics increased by 118,074 (4.1%) to 4.9 million and total attendances increased by 217,109 (3.1%) to 15.2 million.

Did not attend (DNA) rate for first outpatient appointments was 8.8% for Q3 2015/16 and 8.8% for Q3 2016/17.
